The Journey Begins
âARE YOU REALLY SURE about doing this?â
âNot you, too, Linnea. I already walked out of my world without telling anyone. Iâm here. Iâm not going to just sit around the castle and wait for news.â
âMust be nice to have that choice.â Linneaâs voice was sulky. She had made several unsuccessful attempts to convince her parents she should be allowed to go with William and Quinn on the trip.
After listening to the debacle for most of the day, though, Quinn was beginning to feel grateful that they werenât going to stop her and William from going. Truthfully, after listening to all of the points that Stephen and Charlotte made about the danger, she was beginning to wonder why theyâd given in so easily about the two of them. Though she didnât at all understand why, sheâd become convinced that it had to do with Alvinâs presence at the meeting the night before.
âSorry, Nay. I know it isnât going to be easy.â
âWhatâs not going to be easy?â William stepped into Quinnâs room through the open doorway.
âStaying here while you two run off to go find Thomas.â
Quinn watched as conflicting emotions crossed Williamâs face before he settled on sympathy. âYeah, itâs going to be hard on you, I know. Iâll send word as soon as we find out anything¸ I promise.â
âYouâd better. What are you doing in here, anyway?â Linnea asked, staring at the medical bag he was carrying.
âWhat? Iâm not welcome to spend time with the two of you?â His expression was teasing, which surprised Quinn. Heâd been so serious lately, and everyoneâs stress level was so high right now that she had figured sheâd mostly be seeing his solemn, sulky side. Ever since theyâd come through the gate together last night, though, heâd been downright friendly. She had always sort of thought that his serious side was his dominant one; now she wasnât so sure.
Quinn smiled, but Linnea glared at her brother. Her mood today had been unabashedly dark.
âWell, I did want to see what the two of you were doing, and see if you needed anything else to prepare for the journey tomorrow, but mostly I thought it was time to get those stitches out.â He looked at Quinn.
She nodded and pulled up her sleeve.
âYouâre taking enough medical supplies with you, right?â Linnea asked as William worked methodically on Quinnâs arm. âJust in caseâ¦â
âDonât start thinking like that, Nay,â Quinn said, wincing as one of his tugs unexpectedly stung.
âSorry,â William said, rubbing at the spot. âI left the ones on this cut in a little too long. A couple of them are a little stuck.â
âWhy didnât you take them out back in Bristlecone?â Linnea asked.
William looked at Quinn when he answered. âBecause I was being an insensitive jerk. I really am sorry about that, Quinn.â
âYeah, well, youâre going to have to make it up to me later, I guess.â She rolled her eyes at him, although right then she was anything but annoyed. She didnât even think heâd
